Aerial surveys of bluefin tuna in the Western Mediterranean sea: retrospective, prospective, perspective ArchiMer
Bonhommeau, Sylvain; Farrugio, Henri; Poisson, Francois; Fromentin, Jean-marc.
While the current stock status of bluefin tuna (BFT) has been considered as declining, there remain considerable data limitations for its stock assessment in the Mediterranean Sea. The collection of fishery-independent data reveals to be crucial to compensate for the lack of Mediterranean purse seine CPUE indices as well as to overcome a potential halt in the bluefin tuna fishery that would impede the monitoring of the stock and the comparison to reference points. Here we present a retrospective of aerial surveys that have been carried out since 2000. It includes the protocol as well as a retrospective of temporal and spatial distribution of detected schools. We then propose several perspectives that could improve the data collection method itself and the...

Aerial surveys to monitor bluefin tuna abundance and track efficiency of management measures ArchiMer
Bauer, Robert; Bonhommeau, Sylvain; Brisset, Blandine; Fromentin, Jean-marc.
Conservation and management measures for exploited fish species rely on our ability to monitor variations in population abundance. In the case of the eastern stock of Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABFT), recent changes in management policies have strongly affected the reliability of fishery-dependent indicators due to drastic changes in fishing season/area, fisheries selectivity and strategy. However, fishery-independent indices of abundance are rare for large pelagic fish, and obtaining them is often costly and labor intensive. Here, we show that scientific aerial surveys are an appropriate tool for monitoring juvenile bluefin tuna abundance in the Mediterranean. We present an abundance index based on 62 aerial surveys conducted since 2000, using 2 statistical...

Analysis of gear interactions in a hake fishery: The case of the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Aldebert, Yvonne; Recasens, Laura; Lleonart, Jordi.
The hake of the Gulf of Lions is the most important target species of the demersal fishery. It is exploited by four types of gear (two trawls, gillnet and longline) used by two countries (France and Spain). Some analyses of its dynamics, based on 19 88 length frequency data by gear, have been performed. These analyses consisted in a VPA (Virtual Population Analysis). phis a Y/R (Yield per Recruit analysis) carried out on two parameter scenarios by sex, under a steady state hypothesis (with constant recruitment). Some estimates of biomass and exploitation level were obtained, and sensitivity to the biological parameters and interaction between types of gear were studied. As a main conclusion, it can be seen that the types of gear fishing mainly small...

Association between bluefin tuna schools and oceanic features in the western Mediterranean ArchiMer
Royer, Francois; Fromentin, Jean-marc; Gaspar, P.
We present an analysis of the distribution of bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus schools spotted during aerial surveys in the Gulf of Lions, in relation to oceanographic features. Bio-optical and thermal properties of the sea surface derived from high-resolution sensors (AVHRR and SeaWiFS) were studied on a daily basis, and an edge-detection technique was applied to detect frontal zones. Geostatistics and point-process analyses were used to evaluate the role of the environment in structuring the spatial pattern of bluefin tuna (BFT). The distribution of schools spotted was strongly non-stationary both in space and time; this is believed to be an effect of the survey design (transect sampling) and the influence of transient oceanographic structures (surface...

Biomass, metabolism and nutrition of zooplankton in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Gaudy, R; Youssara, F; Diaz, F; Raimbault, P.
Zooplankton biomass was measured at 20 stations located along five coastal-offshore transects in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) during spring 1998 and winter 1999, using two nets equipped with 200 and 80 Pm mesh. Biomass was twice as abundant in spring. It increased toward the coast and the west of the gulf and was positively correlated to chlorophyll, primary production and organic particulate matter and negatively to temperature and salinity. The enrichment effect of Rhone river input and the oligotrophic influence of the north Mediterranean current (NMC) were the main distribution factors of zooplankton biomass. Higher biomass was obtained in coastal stations with the 80 mum net, which sampled more efficiently young larval stages and nauplii....

Can satellite-derived chlorophyll imagery be used to trace surface dynamics in coastal zone? A case study in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Forget, Philippe; Andre, Gael.
A comparison of chlorophyll data from SeaWiFS imagery and modeling results from a 3D hydrodynamical model was performed over the northwestern Mediterranean for the entire year of 2001. The study aims at investigating the information content brought by satellite-derived chlorophyll concentration ([Chl]) maps concerning surface dynamics in coastal zone. The study is mainly focused on the Gulf of Lions (GoL) and its outer region, which are mainly influenced by the Rh ne River, local winds and the Northern Current (NC) flowing from the East along the continental slope. The physical hydrodynamical model was continuously run and 40 SeaWiFS images, presenting a significant coverage of the studied area, were selected. The comparison between [ Chl] and sea surface...

Caractérisation et modélisation des processus de bioaccumulation des PCB chez le merlu (Merluccius merluccius) du golfe du Lion ArchiMer
Bodiguel, Xavier.
Understanding bioaccumulation mechanisms of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is a major issue for environmental risk assessment. In this work, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), a model contaminant family, has been studied in the European hake (Merluccius merluccius), a high trophic level species from the Gulf of Lions. High concentrations of PCBs were measured in hake from this area compared to those encountered in the population of the Bay of Biscay. PCB biomagnification was highlighted along its food web from marine phytoplankton, suggesting a strong influence of diet on contamination levels. The role of other biological processes was also apprehended in order to understand the high variability of observed levels. Thus, growth, sex, and also the...

Comparison of three Gobiidae (Teleostei) life history strategies over their geographical range ArchiMer
Bouchereau, Jl; Guelorget, O.
This article summarizes the latest knowledge on the ecology of three gobies. The authors compile data published by various scientists who carried out their research under different conditions, using a variety of methods for collecting data and processing the results. The relationship between population structure and different environmental conditions was considered for three goby species Pomatoschistus minutus (Pallas, 1770), P. microps (Kroyer, 1838) and Gobius niger Linnaeus, 1758, in different geographical areas, notably the Mediterranean (Gulf of Lions and Adriatic) and cold temperate Atlantic (north of the English Channel) parts. In the three species, the life cycles in the Mediterranean, favoured by the local hydroclimate, are "contracted" (growth is...

Constraining the origin of recently deposited particles using natural radionuclides 7 Be and 234 Th ex in deltaic sediments ArchiMer
Wu, Junwen; Rabouille, Christophe; Charmasson, Sabine; Reyss, Jean Louis; Cagnat, Xavier.
7Be and 234Thex activities were determined in sediment cores off the Rhône River mouth (Gulf of Lions), in order to trace the initial transport and deposition of riverine suspended particulate matter (SPM) and evaluate the impact of flood events through 7 cruises carried out between 2007 and 2008. Consistently high 7Be and 234Thex inventories of 2000–3000 mBq cm−2 and 3000–5000 mBq cm−2, respectively, were observed within a ~5 km radius off the Rhône River mouth. Their spatial distributions showed a gradual decrease with increasing distance from the Rhône River mouth, and the decrease in 7Be was more pronounced than that of 234Thex, indicating that recent riverine SPM is rapidly deposited in the area located near the river mouth. This area is also...

Determining bluefin tuna habitat through frontal features in the Mediterranean sea ArchiMer
Royer, Francois; Fromentin, Jean-marc; Farrugio, Henri; Gaspar, Philippe.
The distribution patterns of bluefin tuna schools observed during the STROMBOLI EU project (2000-2002) were analysed in relation to oceanographic conditions. High-resolution radiometers (AVHRR and SeaWiFS) were used on a daily basis to derive maps of environmental variability. An edge detection technique was especially applied to estimate the position of frontal features. Using a variety of geostatistical and point process techniques, we were able to show that the distribution of bluefin schools was partially driven by the occurrence of transient fronts in the Gulf of Lions. This is believed to be mainly a trophic association, since enhanced convergence and retention processes occur at fronts, possibly leading to higher prey densities (e.g. anchovies). The...

Dynamics of harvested demersal fish communities: analysis of the species diversity in the Bay of Biscay (Atlantic Ocean) and in the Gulf of Lions (Mediterranean Sea). ArchiMer
Blanchard, Fabian.
Species diversity variations between the demersal fish assemblages of the Bay of Biscay (Atlantic Ocean) and of the Gulf of Lions (Mediterranean Sea) are analysed on a decade scale. The aim of this study is to interpret the dynamics of these two communities characterised by different level of fishing intensity. Data come from trawl surveys carried out for the direct evaluation of the demersal stocks abundance from 1983 to 1997. Diversity indices used are the Hill's indices N1 and N2, the species richness S, the evenness J', the K-dominance curves and the life strategy of the dominant species. Three demersal fish assemblages are defined in the community of the Bay of Biscay and in that of the Gulf of Lions: coastal, continental shelf, and continental slope....

Echanges côte-large à moyenne échelle au niveau de la pente continentale du Golfe du Lion. Processus et Modélisation ArchiMer
Andre, Gael.
Dynamics of water mass exchanges between the Gulf of Lions (GoL) and the open sea are driven by several physical processes, which influence circulation at several spacio-temporal scales. This study, based on a realistic modelling during two years, aims to bring a better knowledge of circulation and hydrodynamics processes occurring in the NW Mediterranean Sea and in the GoL. Firstly, the NW Mediterranean Basin circulation modelled during the year 2001 is compared with Sea Surface Temperature (SST) satellite measurements (AVHRR) and with the MEDATLAS climatology. These comparisons show a good agreement concerning surface patterns and seasonal variability of the large scale circulation. At lower scale, several processes influence circulation over the shelf...

Effets de l'exploitation par la pêche sur la dynamique de diversité des peuplements de poissons démersaux : analyse comparée du rôle des interactions entre espèces dans le golfe de Gascogne et dans le golfe du Lion ArchiMer
Blanchard, Fabian.
This work deals with the fishing effects on the diversity dynamics of demersal fish communities, focusing on the biotic interactions. Multispecies indices are used in order to characterize the demersal fish community dynamics of the Bay of Biscay and of the Gulf of Lions. These are the diversity indices, the temporal variability of the total biomass and of the slope of the number size spectra and the slope of the species-area curves (spatial segregation). The yearly bottom trawl surveys EVHOE, CHALIST and MEDITS, carried out in these two areas since 1983 by IFREMER for the stocks assessment provide the data. The differences between areas are related to a fishing index (mean value of the annual landings of demersal fish per surface area). Other areas are...

Enregistrements stratigraphiques des cycles climatiques et eustatiques du Quaternaire terminal - Modélisations de la marge continentale du Golfe du Lion. ArchiMer
Jouet, Gwenael.
Earth's climate oscillated during the Late Quaternary following the major glacial-interglacial cycles. These well-known variations influenced continental and marine sedimentary records worldwide. However, the associated changes of global sea-level and of environmental factors are not precisely documented, neither are their stratigraphic signatures. The extensive geophysical and sedimentological investigations carried out in the Gulf of Lions (Western Mediterranean) since the early 90's allow us to explore the expanded sedimentary records preserved on this continental margin during the Late Quaternary. The combination of high sediment supply (largely from Alpine glaciers) and significant subsidence favoured an almost continuous record, at the shelf edge, of...

Erosional processes and paleo-environmental changes in the Western Gulf of Lions (SW France) during the Messinian Salinity Crisis ArchiMer
Lofi, Johanna; Gorini, Christian; Berne, Serge; Clauzon, Georges; Dos Reis, A.tadeu; Ryan, William; Steckler, Michael.
Current interpretation of the Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC) involves partial "clesiccation" of the Mediterranean Sea coupled with the deposition of thick evaporites in the deep basins. New sets of seismic reflection profiles in the western part of the Gulf of Lions confirm the basinward extension of the Messinian erosion and enable the mapping of distinctive seismic markers indicating the Messinian Erosional Surface (or Messinian unconformity), the basin-margin detrital deposits, and the deep evaporite sequence. The geometrical relationship between these three elements and their relationship to the paleogeography of the margin during the MSC provide new information about the evolution of the study area during the Messinian. The Messinian Erosional...

Evolution of rifted continental margins: The case of the Gulf of Lions (Western Mediterranean Basin) ArchiMer
Bache, Francois; Olivet, Jean-louis; Gorini, Christian; Aslanian, Daniel; Labails, Cinthia; Rabineau, Marina.
The formation of rifted continental margins has long been explained by numerous physical models. However, field observations are still lacking to validate or constrain these models. This study presents major new observations on the broad continental margin of the Gulf of Lions, based on a large amount of varied data. Two contrasting regions characterize the thinned continental crust of this margin. One of these regions corresponds to a narrow rift zone (40–50 km wide) that was highly thinned and stretched during rifting. In contrast with this domain, a large part of the margin subsided slowly during rifting and then rapidly after rifting. The thinning of this domain cannot be explained by stretching of the upper crust. We can thus recognize a zonation of...

Facteurs de contrôle sur le fonctionnement du système turbiditique du Rhône depuis le Dernier Maximum Glaciaire ArchiMer
Lombo Tombo, Swesslath.
Turbidite systems are accumulations of fluvial sediment on the continental margins. They are mainly made of « turbidites » deposited after the flow of turbidity currents inside submarine canyons and channels. Their structure and composition are controlled by global and regional environmental changes such as sea level and climate. The two fundamental parameters that govern their functioning are the production of sediment in the river watersheds and the capability and reactivity of the transfer to the turbidite system. In this work we show that for the last 24,000 years the functioning of the Rhone turbidite system has shown rapid changes under the control of sea level and sediment production fluctuations. Our results are based on a millennial time-scale...

Fluctuations of landings and environmental conditions in the north-western Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Lloret, J; Lleonart, J; Sole, I; Fromentin, Jean-marc.
Most of the monthly catches and CPUE of 13 studied commercial species in the coastal waters of the north-western Mediterranean were significantly positively correlated with run-off of local rivers (Rhone and Muga) and the wind mixing index during the spawning season, with time lags of less than a year (transfer function analyses). Rhone and Ebre interannual fluctuations in run-off were synchronous and were related to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), river run-offs being negatively correlated to high NAO episodes. The fluctuations of river discharges and the wind mixing index were cyclic but not related. The results showed that enhanced hydroclimatic conditions in the NW Mediterranean were favourable for the productivity of the fish and invertebrate...
